The 7s season of the Carmarthen Warriors continued on the weekend at one of the premier UK tournaments in Bournemouth.

Over 30,000 spectators and players headed to the two day festival which saw the return of the Warriors Legends in the over 35s competition.

The men's side meanwhile, were drawn in Group B alongside 2017 champions Apache.

And the Carmarthen based outfit got a flying start, registering a 31-21 win against Jamaica 7s.

Apache were next, and Arwel Davies' team fronted up well but lost by five points in what ultimately proved a frustrating affair.

Nevertheless, victory over the oddly named ‘Moth in a China Shop’ sidesecured progression to Sunday’s quarter finals.

It meant a good first day of work for the Warriors, with Alex Pickersgill again leading from the front, ably supported by new recruit Shaun Pearce, a constant threat in attack, and Amosa Nova, solid in defence. Neath’s Scott Gibson was also as consistent as ever.

Meanwhile, over on the ‘Veteran’ pitches, the Legends were making light work of the opposition, disposing of 13 Minuters 31-12 and Oaks Old Boys 29-19.

This took them top of their group and straight into the final against Rugby For Heroes.

With 2018 WRU National Cup and Principality Premiership winner Richard Carter crossing the line in every game, the Legends overcame their opponents 19-7 and claimed the inaugural Bournemouth Vets title.

With one celebration already in the bag, the Warriors failed set up another as they were overpowered by a strong Army side in Sunday’s quarter final.

The Army have recently returned to the circuit and appear as strong as ever, prevailing 35-3 before eventually going on to finish tournament runners up.

There was no shame in the defeat for the Warriors, but more worrying was the shoulder injury suffered by Ryan Davies -whose defence had been resolute throughout the weekend.

As ever, the Warriors management and players came away from Bournemouth having enjoyed the experience on and off the field. Taking home the Vets Cup shows that the ‘old boys’ are still a force to be reckoned with, whilst their younger colleagues again competed well at the highest level.

A short break awaits before the squad head to Frome on June 16th to defend their 2017 title.
