Blackford has big boots to fill at Goodwick
4:00pm Wednesday 20th June 2012 in Pembrokeshire sports news
Steve Blackford has been voted in as the new manager of division one outfit Goodwick United.
He was narrowly voted in by members after defeating Nigel Delaney in a two-horse race for the position as manager at the club’s annual general meeting.
Blackford, who still plays, commented afterwards: “I was really flattered to be nominated but also delighted that I have been given the opportunity to be manager of a fine club.
“With a new clubhouse, there’s exciting times ahead both on and off the pitch.
“I’ve certainly got big boots to fill after playing under both Sean O’Connor and Bernie Armstrong, but it’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”
Bernie Armstrong decided to step down as manager after six loyal years involved, saying his highlight was watching his team defeat Merlins Bridge 3-1 to lift the Senior Cup Final in 2010.
“I’ve enjoyed my time with the boys,” said Armstrong. “I think it was the right time for me to step aside and let someone else take the team forward. Congratulations to Steve I wish him and the whole squad all the best for the future.”
