MIKE Phillips knows he’s in a real battle with Rhys Webb for the Wales No. 9 shirt but he’s determined to win his starting place back in time for one last World Cup campaign, writes Andrew Penman.

Phillips, now with Racing Metro, had to watch as Webb started in Saturday’s loss to Australia but could get his chance to shine against Fiji this weekend.

Ospreys scrum-half Webb scored an early try against the Wallabies but then saw his long miss pass cut out by Israel Folau, who raced the length of the field to touch down and set the tourists on the way to a tense 33-28 victory.

Phillips defended his rival but admitted he is desperate to force his way back into Warren Gatland’s starting XV.

“I’ve been fortunate to start a lot over recent years but Rhys has deserved his chance and I thought he played well,” said the 32-year-old.

“It’s great to have competition in the squad and we’re in a very lucky position to have so many youngsters coming through.

“Rhys took his try very well and deserved his opportunity but I’m a competitor.

“I’m a proud man and I want to play for Wales and I always will.

“I’m enjoying being back in the set-up and looking forward to a hard week of training and hopefully getting back to winning ways against Fiji.

“It’s all about goals and we all want to be at the World Cup,” he added. “It’s a massive year of rugby in the build-up and you have to play well every time you have the opportunity for Wales.”

Phillips expects a tough challenge against Fiji and says the visitors will raise their game at the Millennium Stadium.

“We all know that they are a very dangerous team and we’ve come up short against them in previous years,” he said.

“Last time they played here it was a draw so we know we have to be on song on the weekend.

“We’re lucky in Wales to have one of the best stadiums in the world and talking to players in South Africa and Australia they all love coming to play at the Millennium Stadium.

“It’s great but in a way it’s a bit unfortunate as well. It’s the chance for Fiji to shine and prove themselves on the world stage.”
