WALES coach Rob Howley says Warren Gatland is looking to the future by handing dual contracts to Hallam Amos and Tyler Morgan but has dangled the carrot of World Cup rugby in front of the Newport Gwent Dragons pair, writes Chris Kirwan.

Once-capped full-back/wing Amos, 20, and uncapped centre/wing Morgan, 19, agreed terms with the Welsh Rugby Union last week.

Amos was capped against Tonga in 2013 and was an unused member of the squad for the autumn internationals, operating as 24th man and warming up on the Millennium Stadium turf ahead of the famous win against South Africa.

Morgan has previously trained with the Test squad while on international age-grade duty and Gatland revealed that he would have been called-up to the seniors last month were it not for a knee injury.

With Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Cuthbert and Liam Williams fighting it out for starts in the back three and Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies being kept on their toes by Scott Williams and Cory Allen, assistant coach Howley admits the Dragons pair may have to be patient.

"The one thing that Gats has always done is look at the succession plan, three, four five years ahead," said the former scrum-half.

"Hallam and Tyler are at the forefront of that because they have shown, not only at regional level but when they've come in with us, that they have the ability to wear the national jersey in the future.

"We are going to sit down soon with the Six Nations selection in mind and you never know what can happen with a World Cup around the corner, both players are in contention but it's important that we look at everyone.

"At the moment there are other players ahead of them but you never know because seven months is a long time in Welsh rugby."

Howley is relishing the chance to watch the pair develop at the Dragons and work with them at Wales' Vale of Glamorgan headquarters.

"We've always had an eye on Tyler because he has impressed when with Wales Under-18s and 20s," he said.

"Both players have an X factor and put bums on seats at Rodney Parade with their creation, skill sets and ability to beat a player.

"It's now about developing that at a higher level and as a young player coming through you always want to test yourself."
