SCRUM-HALF Rhys Webb says Wales cannot afford a relapse in Paris after grabbing their shot at redemption in Edinburgh.

Warren Gatland’s team secured an eighth successive win against Scotland thanks to tries by the Ospreys number 9 and centre Jonathan Davies plus 16 points from the boot of Leigh Halfpenny in a 26-23 victory.

It was a hard-earned success that keeps them in the mix for the title after their nightmare opening loss to England at the Millennium Stadium.

However, they have no margin for error and need to win again on the road when they take on France a week on Saturday.

“France like to flick it round,” said Webb. “They have got some dangerous backs and some big forwards. We have got to be careful with them and it’s going to be a tough challenge out there.

“We just need to keep going now. We can’t go back to where we were against England. This is where we are now and the hopes of winning the championship are still on.

“It’s all still to play for and it’s exciting. It is there for the taking, but we’ve got to keep getting better and put in some good performances.”

Gatland was under pressure to wield the axe after the 21-16 loss to England but gave his charges another chance to impress.

While there is still plenty of room for improvement ahead of the clash with Les Bleus, who lost in Dublin on Saturday, the head coach’s loyalty was repaid.

“It was a terrible performance by us against England and we knew we had to play well against Scotland,” said Webb.

“You are not guaranteed the jersey and you have to play well to keep it. We were lucky enough to have another chance to redeem ourselves.

“We were obviously bitterly disappointed with that loss to England, but we had to put that to the back of our minds, regroup and get together. I think it was just a one-off.

“We played some pleasing rugby in Scotland. Against England we weren’t dealing with the threats that were coming over the ball. We were hitting the rucks, but not being effective.

“We had quite a lot of turnovers. Sam Warburton and Gethin Jenkins were over the ball well. It was the other way round this week and it’s obviously nice with a pack working hard and going forward.”
