WARREN Gatland says that Wales’ fringe players fluffed their lines on their audition for Test spots in their embarrassing 40-7 defeat to the Chiefs.

The Super Rugby side, who were without eight All Blacks and a number of regulars, ran in six tries in an incredible romp in Hamilton.

It leaves Wales licking their wounds ahead of the second Test in Wellington and the management, who will be under the microscope themselves, are left with precious few selection headaches so disappointing was the display against the Chiefs.

“It probably answered a few question on a few players who have been knocking on our door in terms of why they wanted an opportunity at Test match level. We were second best by a long way,” said Gatland.

“We weren’t clinical and they took every opportunity that came their way. It was disappointing.

“They ran really hard into the contact and we have to learn from that; at this level you have to win those collisions and sometimes it’s a simple game, it’s just running hard and trying to be dominant in attack and defence.”

He continued: “There will be a lot of changes for Saturday. There were a lot of fringe players out there against the Chiefs trying to put a hand up and make a statement. Unfortunately they didn’t do that.”

Wales name their side for the second Test tomorrow night with one enforced change necessary following George North’s tour-ending hamstring injury in the 39-21 loss in Auckland.
