WALES boss Rob Howley will weigh up a recall for Hallam Amos after the Newport Gwent Dragons wing's lively cameo in the horror show against Australia, writes Chris Kirwan.

The autumn series was opened with a 32-8 drubbing at the hands of the Wallabies at Principality Stadium, the tourists crossing for five tries in a one-sided contest.

Wales host Argentina on Saturday (kick-off 5.30pm) and Amos, who started all four summer Tests against England and New Zealand, is pressing hard for a return to the XV after shining off the bench.

According to ESPN's stats, the Dragons man ran for more metres (70) and made more clean breaks (3) than anyone else in red despite being on for just 20 minutes.

Amos played a big part in the sole Welsh try with a break and lively offload in the build-up to Scott Williams' score while he was denied a five-pointer of his own by the TMO after a super cover tackle by Aussie scrum-half Nick Frisby.

He was clutching his left shoulder after that incident but the blow isn't thought to be serious and his return may depend on whether Liam Williams returns from an ankle injury but last weekend's wingers George North and Alex Cuthbert are under pressure after their displays in both attack and defence.

"He made a couple of line breaks, was unlucky for the 'try' and was competent on the ball," said Howley.

"One area that Australia certainly affected in both halves was the aerial battle, that's something that we've prided ourselves on and they were very effective in that area with the accuracy of their kicking and the challenge in the air."

The decision to switch North and Cuthbert from their usual preferred wings raised a few eyebrows, especially when both men looked unsteady in defence.

"We felt that George's influence on the right wing, the number of touches (he can have) and after he played particularly well in New Zealand (that is was worth switching)," said Howley.

"We've had a number of players who have stepped into that left wing position. Alex was there throughout last week (in training) along with Hallam and we felt that it was an option to try."

Wales will provide an injury update at the press conference at 1pm (MON) but bad news is expected after scrum-half Rhys Webb landed awkwardly on his right ankle against the Wallabies.

The availability of lock Alun Wyn Jones, who was on compassionate leave following the death of his father Tim, will impact on Dragons lock Cory Hill, who did well after coming off the bench for his Test bow.
"It was good to see the new caps come on and get a first experience of international rugby, they will be better for that," said Howley.
