WALES Under-20s got the defence of their Six Nations crown off to a winning start by beating Italy 27-5 in Milan.

Coach Jason Strange handed debuts to 20 players but they started in the fashion of their Grand Slam winning predecessors in challenging conditions.

Prop Rhys Carre went over in the first half, 17-year-old winger Ryan Conbeer finished impressively for a second and centre Kieran Williams crossed at the death while Ben Jones added 12 points with the boot.

The home side took the lead with a try by lock Giordani Baldino after 14 minutes from a driving lineout but six minutes later the Welsh pack responded in kind with Carre finishing.

Jones added the extras and kicked penalties either side of half time for a 13-5 lead.

Conbeer then stretched the advantage with a majestic finish, Jones converting from the touchline, and Williams scored with the last play after exploiting a defensive mix-up to race over from 30 metres.
