FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons full-back Phil Dollman has been called into the Wales squad for the summer tour to face Tonga and Samoa.

The 32-year-old from Caerphilly left Rodney Parade for Exeter, who were then in the Championship, in 2009 and has been a huge hit for the Chiefs.

He will play in Saturday’s Aviva Premiership final against Wasps at Twickenham and will then join up with the Wales squad for the first time as a replacement for injured Cardiff Blues prospect Rhun Williams.

Dollman, Principality Premiership player of the year in 2006 for his exploits with Bedwas, played 38 times for the Dragons as a centre/full-back until forced to head over the border when he didn’t receive a fresh contract offer.

"I was a bit down when I was leaving Wales and felt a bit cast aside, but I have found my feet here and it has been a brilliant experience,” he said last year.

"I had grown up playing at Caerphilly, Bedwas and then the Dragons, and you never imagine that one day you might move away when you are playing in Wales.

"We had talked contracts at the Dragons, but nothing came, and it got to a point where I needed to look for other clubs. Exeter were in the market for someone like me, and when the offer came in, I snapped it up.

"It was a bit on the hoof, a bit out of nowhere, but I was prepared to make the move. I knew I wanted to play rugby professionally and keep that going. I wanted to push as much as I could, but there wasn't anything in Wales for me."

Now Dollman will return to Wales and tussle with Gareth Anscombe and Sam Davies for the start at full-back in the absence of Lions pair Leigh Halfpenny and Liam Williams as well as Dragons speedster Hallam Amos, who hasn’t played since injuring his shoulder against Australia last November.

Wales play a warm-up fixture against RGC 1404 in Colwyn Bay on Friday, June 2 before playing Tonga in Auckland on Friday, June 16 and Samoa in Apia on Friday, June 23.
