Wales' Davies and Ireland's Ferris are cited

CITED: Bradley Davies CITED: Bradley Davies

WALES lock Bradley Davies and Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris have both been cited for foul play during Sunday's RBS 6 Nations game between the countries in Dublin.

Tournament organisers have announced the citings, which were made by match commissioner, Italian Achille Reali.

Davies was yellow-carded for a tip-tackle on Ireland replacement Donnacha Ryan, while Ferris received an identical punishment for his tackle on Davies' second-row partner Ian Evans.

Ferris infringed in the last minute of the game, and Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicked the resulting penalty to give his team a 23-21 victory.

Davies and Ferris will appear before an independent Six Nations disciplinary committee in London tomorrow.

Wales continue their Six Nations campaign against Scotland in Cardiff next Sunday, while Ireland meet France in Paris the previous evening.

Reali has taken his action under the International Rugby Board's Law 10.4 (j).

It states: "Lifting a player from the ground, and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player's feet are still off the ground such that the player's head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground, is dangerous play.’’ Wales coach Warren Gatland admitted after the match that Davies was fortunate to avoid a red card, escaping with a sin-binning from referee Wayne Barnes on the recommendation of his assistant Dave Pearson.

Ferris' offence looked far less serious, but he now faces an anxious wait before discovering whether or not he will be sidelined for any part of the tournament.

For his part, Davies seems likely to land a ban, which would give Gatland a second-row selection poser given that World Cup locks Alun-Wyn Jones and Luke Charteris are currently injured and unavailable.

If Gatland is without Davies for the Scottish clash, then he could consider moving flanker Ryan Jones to second-row duty, especially if blindside Dan Lydiate shakes off an ankle injury that sidelined him from the Dublin trip.

Gatland also has uncapped Scarlets lock Lou Reed in his Six Nations squad, but the Davies episode is clearly one he can do without.

Gatland is due to name his team for the Scotland encounter tomorrow, but it would be no surprise if that was put back until later in the week, possibly to Friday.

Apart from Davies' disciplinary hearing to occupy his thoughts, Gatland will also be keeping a close eye on captain Sam Warburton.

Warburton, who was sent off for a tip-tackle against World Cup semi-final opponents France four months ago, departed at half-time in Dublin because of a leg injury and he was due to undergo intensive treatment over the past 24 hours.

Result should be:

Davies banned for season : a deliberate, senseless act that could easily have resulted in very serious injury.

Ferris no further action : an unlucky tackle with no intent, a penalty, yes, but not a yellow card.

Knowing how out of touch the hierarchy are Davies will probably get three weeks and Ferris two.

You need to look at why it happened in the first place. There was a deliberate punch into the ribs of a Welsh player on the floor that angered Davies that is why he did what he did, the ref missed that and in fact missed both pffences, it was the touch judge who flagged the tip tackle. The Davies tackle was out of anger and should result in ban for the next four games meaning he wont play again in this years six nations. I agree that the Ferris tackle was not intentional but it was deemed to be dangerous and was punished by the ref. It is now for the disciplinary board to decide if a ban is warrented, I do personnally and think that a two match ban would be appropriate. The whole thing about these dangerous tackles needs to be made far more clear and the level of intent is the key, if a player does it by accident a yellow card would be right but if there was an deliberate element then a red card and a ban is called for. The powers that be need to get much more clarity into this. There seems to be a reluctance to red card a player since the Warburton case so is there an addmission that the ref got the Warburton case wrong?

Donnacha Ryan, who committed in many ways a similarly dangerous foul, which incensed Bradley, gets off Scot free!!!! It's about time the powers that be got their act together.

SWBorderer, you are nothing but a biased piece of s***! "Davies banned for season" and "Ferris no further action"?!!! They BOTH did wrong! If they were both "professional" rugby players, then NONE of them would have done a tackle like that and this is coming from a Welsh person! You cannot criticise any player without knowing any intent was made. They both spear-tackled. End of!

While we are on about suspensions being dished out for infringments in the six nations, has anyone thought of the impact that may well have on the competition at large. The infringment was in a game against Ireland, so the player will be suspended for games against Scotland, england, France and Italy. Who gains from this type of punishment, not Wales or even Ireland. The player loses a bit of money and has to suffer the ban but the other sides gain something dont they!

No you don't...no excuse whatsoever!

"There seems to be a reluctance to red card a player since the Warburton case so is there an addmission that the ref got the Warburton case wrong"

No, just means the other refs are not reffing the rules of the game! (Btw doesn't mean that I agree with the rule).

"They both spear-tackled. End of!"

Are you seriously saying that a man being tackled with the ball is the same as a deliberate act of violence off the ball???

I think the offence (and it is an obvious offence) has to be seen in context. Ryan's cheap shot on Adam Jones caused Bradley to see red mist. It is no excuse for what he did. It almost cost Wales the game. He will do his time and come back a wiser player. I have no doubt.

The offence by Davies is a bad one and breaches law10.4 j which says "Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player's feet are still off the ground such that the player's head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangferous play." The sanction for this is a penalty. He was penalised and sent to the sin bin. He now faces a citing which is normal process. Ferris is guilty of the same offence lifting a player of the ground and dropping him while his feet were in the air so that he landed on his head or shoulders. The difference is firstly was there any intent and secondly was there any malice. The first case I would say probably yes because he was angry that Ryan had barged into a team mate like a mad bull and reacted the way he did. Ferris however did not have the cause to act the way he did and it was with some malice (even though he had not intended to do so) and as a result he was yellow carded. As to the red for Sam Warburton does anyone suggest he did it with any malice or was it a bad tackle managed poorly by him?

It's a severn week ban then, fits in with the six nations games left, fair in the long run f things but a little unfair as those teams we have to play get some sort of advantage, but that's how it works I suppose.

When you stoop to personal insults your argument loses all credability. Please keep your foul mouth to yourself in future.

I am entitled to my opinion as you are to yours, your argument simply shows a lack of knowledge of the wording of the guidlines.

SWBoarder you are right to point out that using bad language and calling someone's personal circumstances into question does the argument no good at all. However the IRB disciplinary board has now decided that a seven week ban is appropriate and he won't play again in this years six nations. The matter should now be closed as I believe there will be no appeal. Has anyone heard the result of the Irish citing result?

Ferris has not had a ban from his citing, fair enough really as a ban would only do the others a favour. Not his style to play dirty so fair enough.
