Going for Gold to make TV return

Classic 1990s quiz show Going For Gold is being revived, it was announced.

John Suchet will take on the role in the comeback once held by host Henry Kelly. The original saw people from different countries competing against each other. But European contestants have been ditched in the revival, to be broadcast by Five.

The show's four British contestants will take on the same rounds as they did in the original - beat-the-buzzer, four-in-a-row, and head-to-head.

The daily winner of the cash prize will then be given the chance to return on the next edition to defend their title.

As well as the daily 12.45pm show, there will be Going For Gold Extra, a 10-minute programme later in the afternoon, pitting the winner of the daily show with a viewer at home.

The programme, with its famous theme tune, became a cult hit and ran for nearly a decade after it was first broadcast on the BBC in the late 1980s.

Former Five newsreader Suchet said: "I'm delighted to be presenting Going for Gold on Five.

"After years of reading the news this will be the first time I've hosted a quiz show so it's a brand new challenge and I'm really excited to try something new."

Five's director of programmes Ben Gale said: "It is a much-loved and fondly remembered quiz show and to have someone of John's experience to front the series will only add to its already iconic status."

The series will be broadcast daily at 12.45pm from October 13.
