A toddler has died after suffering serious head injuries falling from a moving car, police have said.

Two-year-old Levi Brailsford was in the car travelling in Stockwood near Bristol, at about 4pm on Friday when the incident happened.

As the car turned left out of Hollway Road into Stockwood Lane the child fell from the vehicle on to the road and suffered serious head injuries, a police spokeswoman said.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene before he was taken to Frenchay Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said: "The road was closed to allow collision investigators to carry out an examination of the scene and the car. Police inquiries continue to discover exactly what happened and police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to help their investigation."

Anyone able to help is asked to contact the collision investigation unit on the force number 101.

Flowers, cards and soft toys have been left at the scene of the incident.

Levi's parents Kevin and Andrea left a tribute to their "little star". It said: "A big thankyou to everyone who has given for our Baby boy Levi, our little star. We have taken the cards and toys to put in his box again."

Another message read: "RIP Little man. Thinking of all your family at this sad time. Sleep tight. Hugs and Kisses."

A small brown bear was also left holding the message: "Levi, May your star shine bright for all to see. With love always. xxxx"
