10:34am Monday 23rd February 2009
Ludchurch Women’s Institute The February meeting was held at Blackmoor Farm, Ludchurch where members were welcomed by president, Bea Jones.
There were congratulations and a presentation of camellia plant to Kathleen Phillips upon the occasion of her 80th birthday.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and members were reminded of the Kingsmoor group meeting on Monday March 16th, which will be held at the New Amroth Parish Hall, Summerhill. Ludchurch WI will be providing the refreshments together with Templeton WI and the competition will be a holiday souvenir.
The Kingsmoor Coffee morning will be held on Thursday May 14th at Wiseman’s Bridge Inn. Ludchurch WI will be in charge of the cake stall as usual.
Sue Pike, social secretary announced that the summer trip to Picton castle will be on June 5th with a woodland walk, and a meal later.
Two members attended the mini-consultative meeting in January, and there will be three teams for the general knowledge quiz later in the month.
The guest speaker for the evening was Mr Chris Stephens, writer of Tanglost Tales for children, ex head teacher and trustee with Narberth Museum. Mr Stephens has a splendid collection of Victorian Samplers some of which he displayed at the meeting. Most of the very valuable samplers were from the 1800’s and the stitching was still very colourful. It was part of a girl’s education during the Victorian times to learn to sew, and samplers often gave a picture of the social life of the day. Mr Stephens holds exhibitions of these very interesting samplers from time to time.
Maggie Evans gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the members.
The hostesses for the evening were Phyllis Mammatt and Sheila Edwards.
The competition, a piece of cross-stitch embroidery, was won by Mary Hodgeon, Eve Cornthwaite and Ann Frazer, and the raffle was won by Eira Carr.
The next meeting will be held on Friday March 6th at Blackmoor Farm
