In Tokyo, Osamu and Nobuyo are raising their family in poverty, subsidising what little income they have with petty thievery.
On a shoplifting expedition with his son, Shota, they discover Yuri, a homeless girl. Taking her home, they see evidence of abuse and despite their strained finances, informally adopt her.
“In Shoplifters” a beautifully felt family drama, the Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda dives into the mess with a story about a household on the ragged edge,” says The NY Times
“This is a brilliant and audacious film, one of his very best, a study of family trauma and fear of poverty,” writes The Guardian, while The Independent says: “Kore-eda excels in working with kids. He again elicits extraordinarily moving and layered performances from his child actors here.”
