THEATR Mwldan Film Society presents the celebrated film If Beale Street Could Talk (15) on Sunday, March 31 at 6pm.

In early 1970s Harlem, Tish recalls the passion, respect and trust that connect her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt.

Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Alonzo is arrested for a crime he did not commit.

Based on a novel by James Baldwin, this is the latest film from Barry Jenkins, director of the Oscar-winning film Moonlight.

“Now, Jenkins’s adaptation of James Baldwin’s 1970s novel becomes a heart-stopping cinematic love story, told with a tough but tender truthfulness that left me weeping and swooning,” writes The Guardian.

“The result is the most sweepingly romantic polemic you’ll ever see, a love story that will make you want to take up arms against a cruel world,” says Empire, while the New York Times adds: “Every so often, the characters in Barry Jenkins’s anguished and mournful “If Beale Street Could Talk” look straight at the camera, and at you.”
