AN INTERNATIONAL music festival is trying to attract a new generation of music lovers and musicians.

As part of a 50th anniversary programme, Fishguard International Music Festival 2019 is looking to the future with a series of events aimed at encouraging young musicians and attracting younger audiences.

The festival opens on July 20 with a concert in St David’s Cathedral featuring Côr Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion in their first performance since winning the overall prize at Côr Cymru 2019.

They will appear alongside Sir Bryn Terfel (baritone), Llŷr Williams (piano) and Hannah Stone (harp) The Saints and Stones Tour on Monday, July 22, at 10am is a guided musical tour of four of North Pembrokeshire’s churches and chapels.

Young musicians will perform at each location as local historian Rev Richard Davies leads the visitors in an exploration of the buildings interiors.

The tour will also run on Saturday, July 27, at 10am.

On August 1, at 11am at Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard, percussion duo Conundrum will be presenting an interactive programme for children and their parents.

This will include works ranging from classical to Disney, all played on a variety of tuned and untuned percussion instruments.

On the evening of August 1, Newport Music Society will present a concert in Ebenezer Chapel, Newport, which will showcase some of west Wales’ finest young musicians.

Last but not least, the National Youth Orchestra of Wales will be bringing the festival to a close on August 2 at St David’s Cathedral.

Starting at 7.30pm, the programme, conducted by Andrew Litton, includes Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes by Grace Williams and Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10.

As part of its commitment to making FIMF accessible to younger audiences, ticket prices for all the festival events (except the opening concert) will be just £1 for under-16s and £5 for 16-24 year-olds.
