A community group battling to save Narberth swimming pool from closure say they have hit their initial target of £130,000.

As the Western Telegraph has previously reported, campaigners launched a share offer to keep the community pool open.

Today (Wednesday) Sue Rees of SwimNarberth said they have crossed the £130,000 mark and restarted talks with Pembrokeshire County Council to take over the running of the pool.

She added: “We have re-instigated talks with PCC to ensure that the pool is not closed and that we can take over the business as of the 1st November.

“This has been a massive feat and I would like to thank everyone for their support, lots of people said it was impossible to raise that amount of money in just a few months but we have proved them all wrong. “We still have a way to go to raise our final total of £200,000.00, which will allow us to install the PV panels and complete our plan for sustainability, but once we take over the pool I feel sure we will achieve that.”

Sue said: “I would like especially to thank our small action group, Ruth Barnes, Jenny Price, Kelly Harrison, Oshi Owen, Helena Warn, who have fought tirelessly throughout to make this happen.

“I would also like to thank Rebecca Cadbury, Sarah Gerlach from PLANED, Cllr Elwyn Morse, John Sleigh, Ben Ferguson Walker, Jocelyn Quarrinton and of course the staff at the pool, thanks guys we could not have done it without your help.

“Most of all I would like to thank everyone who had the faith to donate, or invest, it just goes to show what can be achieved if you are determined enough. Thank you all.”
