A 2,211 tonne barge, first used to transport Concorde up the Thames, was in Gelliswick Bay last Friday morning, discharging its cargo of two LNG compressors.
The semi-submersible vessel, which is 80 metres long and 16.5 metres wide, with a depth of 8.5 metres, had sailed from Southampton and came in on the high tide this morning. She was then ballasted and a track built from the beach to her stern.
The cargo of two LNG compressors weighing a total of 160 tonnes and measuring 20 by 7 metres each couldn't be transported to Pembrokeshire by road.
"This boat was designed to get abnormal loads off the road," said the owner of the vessel David Wynn, "and that is exactly what she is doing here."
The compressors were towed off the barge on trailers and taken under police escort to the old Esso site.
