THE wind of change continues to blow through St David’s Church in Prendergast, with the erection of a new weather vane on its tower.

Thanks to donations from bodies including the Heritage Lottery Fund, local business sponsors, and considerable fund-raising efforts by parishioners, good progress has been made on repairs to the Church’s roof and mediaeval tower.

The work has now been crowned with the replacement weather vane, provided free of charge by Eifion Thomas of E Thomas & Sons, Blacksmiths, from Dinas Cross. The finely crafted ironwork is a copy of the previous vane’s historic design.

“When I attended the Strawberry Tea at Crundale Hall last July, I noticed the poor state of repair of the old weather vane,” said Eifion. “I was aware of the considerable work and fund-raising being carried out to repair the tower and roof. My wife's family has a long association with the church so I was delighted to be able to offer my skills to make a new one.”

The Rector, Canon Geoffrey Gwyther, said he was “most grateful” for Eifion’s generous gift.

“I have already received many favourable comments from parishioners,” he added. “It is good to be able to see the direction from which the wind is blowing again. All we need now is the belfry floor to be finished and the recommissioning of the bell, and then all will be completed.”

Fundraising for the repairs continues with the annual Strawberry Tea at Crundale Hall on Friday, July 24, and the launch of a booklet later this year, detailing the history of the church and surrounding area, compiled by Church Treasurer Mr David Redd.
