A search for crew members has been called off for the night after a fishing vessel sank off the  Pembrokeshire coast.

UK Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public just before 2.30pm today (Thursday).

The caller said they could see a fishing vessel in difficulty near the rocks at St David’s Head, Pembrokeshire.

The fishing vessel subsequently sank.

It is thought two people were on board. There was no sign of them when RNLI crews arrived on scene.

The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at St Athan, Coastguard Rescue Teams from St David's Head and Fishguard searched the area.

UPDATE: 7pm: Statement from Dyfed-Powys Police: "HM Coastguard, RNLI and Dyfed Powys Police are currently dealing with a coastal incident following a report of a fishing vessel in difficulties in the Abereiddi area on St Davids’ Head, Pembrokeshire. 

"At this time it is believed that the fishing vessel contained two fishermen, a search for these persons is ongoing. 

"Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to phone 101 quoting message 188 of 28th of April 2016. 

"Family members of the crew have been made aware and are currently being supported by Police officers."

UPDATE: 7.35pm: Jim Phillips - St David's RNLI press officer, said no distress call was made by ship.

He said three lifeboats from St Davids and one from Fishguard launched earlier and Angle lifeboat launched just after 7pm.

The boat is understood to have hit rocks known locally as the Sledges, one mile off Abereiddy beach.

"There is information that two persons were seen in the sea," said Mr Phillips.

UPDATE: 8pm Coastguard helicopter lands at Withysbush Airfield for refuelling. Takes off again and resumes search at 8.45pm

UPDATE: 8.45pm. Crews are still out searching. Any decision to call off the search for the evening would be made by Milford Haven Coastguard.
