Pembroke

MR David (Dave) Day passed away suddenly at his home in Pembroke on May 19 aged 87.

He was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire in 1928. During the war he worked in agriculture in Lincolnshire alongside Land Army girls where he met his wife Audrey.

He moved to Pembrokeshire with his family in 1955 and lived at Manorbier Newton where he established Fernhill Nurseries, specialising in daffodils as well as cucumber and tomato plants for which he was renowned throughout the county.

He and Audrey retired to Pembroke in 1999 where he continued his love of horticulture by visiting public gardens across the country.

The funeral service, which was officiated by the Reverend Andrew Grace, took place at Manorbier church on June 1. He was carried by his grandsons and interred in the idyllic churchyard.

Dave leaves to mourn his wife Audrey; daughters Sandra (Paul), Christine (Alan) and Lindy, and grandchildren Steven, Andrew, (Sarah), Sian, Lee (Hayley), Mike, (Becks), Nicol, Chani, (John) David (Kayleigh), Kira, (Sean); great-grandchildren Arabella, Sofia, Isaac, Aled, Maggie Rose, Marni, Kamika, Mayan, Paige, Jake, Finn, Theo, Lili, Mason and Tyler.

Mr B Evans

Fishguard

THE funeral of the late Barrie Evans took place on Monday May 23 at St Mary’s Church, Fishguard ,where a large gathering of family and friends attended the service which was officiated by Rev.Christopher Brown.

Barrie was laid to rest at St Margaret’s Churchyard, Wolfscastle.

Barrie was born on January 31 1960 to Howard and Bettie Evans in St Davids Road, Letterston.

At three years of age the family moved to Castlemorris, the place where Barrie always loved with a great passion.

After attending Mathry School and Fishguard Secondary, Barrie went on to Neyland College where he did a plumbing apprenticeship and went on to work in that trade.

He also spent ten years working for Mrs Mary Shipton at Caersegan Farm, St Nicholas alongside his beloved brother, John who was ten years older than Barrie but were extremely close.

On John’s death, Barrie went back into the building trade and also spent many years relief milking for his great friend Dickie Lewis at Tresinwen Farm, Strumble Head. This was a time much enjoyed by Barrie.

His other great passion was football. Although he used to say he wasn’t the best, no one tried harder. He spent six years playing at Letterston after they re-started the club in 1979. He then played and coached Fishguard’s 2nd eleven.

Barrie leaves three sisters and two brothers Hazel, Marlene, Thelma, Colin and Graham.

His brothers, John and Peter pre-deceased him.

There were family flowers only with donations in memory of Barrie for Cancer Research UK being received by Paul Jenkins & Sons Funeral Directors, Fishguard, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

V I Jones

Pembroke

VALERIE Irene Jones passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on May 23 at the age of 69 years.

Valerie was born in and had lived all her life in Pembroke.

She went to East End School and later The Coronation School in Pembroke Dock.

She had worked in The Woollen Mill in Pembroke Dock until it closed, then The Lion Hotel in Pembroke and finished her working life with The M.O.D. at Castlemartin Camp, Merrion.

The family left to mourn are Maria and partner, Vincent, Marc, Matthew and Jake; Terry and Lorette, Keith and Pauline, Sarah, Scott and Ben; Andrew and Karen, Michelle and Shaun, Hilda Sweet.

The bearers were Terry, Keith and Andrew Jones and Marc Smith.

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and the service was officiated by Rev. Paul Nash.

The arrangements were carried out by John Roberts & Son, Funeral Directors, Pembroke Dock.

Mr J A Lewis

Loveston

MR John Alec Lewis of Great Loveston Farm passed away at Withybush Hospital on May 16. He was 77.

Alec was a devoted farmer from an early age, firstly on the family farm at Clyne, Martletwy and then onto Great Loveston Farm, Loveston.

He was educated at Martletwy School and later at Cresselly, finishing his education at Narberth School. During his teenage years he played football for Narberth.

Alec was a keen ploughman taking part in local ploughing matches.

In later years he enjoyed coarse fishing and travelling the British Isles.

Sadly over the last 12 years Alec’s health deteriorated forcing him to retire from farming five years ago.

During his retirement he enjoyed long country walks also watching many sports and Western films on TV.

Alec was predeceased by his brother Charles.

The family left to mourn are Lorna and Alan (sister and brother-in-law); Eira (sister); Raymond and Pam, Derek and Mandy (brothers and sisters-in-law); Pam (sister- in- law), many nieces and nephews, Ken (close family friend).

A family service was officiated by Father Paul Boyle at Great Loveston Farm on May 27 then at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, which was attended by family and many friends.

Unable to attend were Lorna, Alan and family also sister-in-law Pam.

Donations in memory of Alec if desired, made payable to ‘Renal Unit Morriston Hospital’ c/o Funeral Directors Messrs. W&M Rossiter & Sons Ltd, Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth, SA67 7DR who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr J L Davies

Crymych

MR Lynn Davies of Brynstop, Crymych passed away peacefully at his home on Good Friday, March 25 at the age of 84.

Lynn was a family man, married to Audrey for 56 years. Brynstop became their first and only home.

Lynn was a member in St Brynach Church, Llanfyrnach all his life and warden for 40 years.

Lynn stood for election to Preseli District Council in 1984. He was a dedicated District Councillor for Eglwyswrw and Crymych, he retained this position until the end of the authority.

He was Preseli Pembrokeshire’s last chairman in 1995.

A large gathering of family and friends attended a funeral service at St Brynach Church, Llanfyrnach on April 2 followed by burial at Brynmyrnach Chapel Cemetery, Hermon.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Audrey (wife), Carol and Dafydd, Rhydwyn and Helen, Ann and Wayne (daughters, son, sons and daughter-inlaw); Llyr, Aron, Carys, Steffan and Llion (grandchildren); Margaret, Kathryn and Alan, Ruth, Paul and Hannah, Delyth, Keith, Amy and William (nieces and (family); Rhiannydd and Les (sister-in-law and brother-in-law; Aled and Non (nephew and wife) plus relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

The minister was Rev Jonathan Copus, prayers by Rev Roger Thomas and the address by Rev Huw George.

A worthy tribute was given by Councillor John Davies.

Rev Hywel Mudd and Rev Ken Thomas were also present.

Councillor Wyn Evans (Chairman) represented Pembrokeshire County Council.

Apologies were given by Rev Emyr Wyn Thomas, Rev George Ladd, Rev Geoffrey Eynon, Rev Islwyn Selby and Rev Aled Gwyn.

The organist was Mrs Joyce Williams.

Flowers in the church were provided by church members.

The bearers at the house and church were the grandchildren, and at the graveside Rhydian Davies, Neville Boulton, Edward Stanford and Vernon Petts.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Colin Phillips and daughters, Funeral Directors, of Cardigan.

Mrs G F Chugg

Haverfordwest

MRS Gwen Chugg passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on May 15.

Gwen was born in 1924 in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, the eldest of 11 children. Although she was proud of her northern roots, she wanted to explore the world. She applied and was accepted into the WRENS. In her time in the WRENS she appeared twice in the Royal Tournament performing gymnastic displays.

Gwen gave up her career in the WRENS when she married Ted in 1950. They lived in Malta for some years and also in Germany. A last move to Pembrokeshire became home for the Chugg family after Ted left the navy.

Ted passed away in 1995 and Gwen was on her own for a few years before meeting John at the bowling club in Haverfordwest. They had many happy times together before her untimely demise.

Gwen was involved in many organisations floral art, the WRENS Association, book group, supper club and bowls to name but a few.

She loved classical music, gardening and was a huge fan of ballet, seeing Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn dancing together was a wonderful memory for her.

Gwen was always a positive personality, who had a huge amount of stamina and was fit, healthy and independent until the last few weeks of her long life.

The family left to mourn are Pamela, Julia and Deborah (daughters); Terry, Stuart and Chris (sons-in-law); Victoria, Martin, Morgan, Holly, Thomas, Ella and Chloe (grandchildren); George, Lauren, Julian and Ian (partners); Kieran, Ellie, Jack, Lucas, Alys and Theo (great grandchildren).

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium in Narberth on June 3.

It was officiated by Fr Marcus Zipperlen.

A poem ‘She is Gone’ was read by granddaughter Holly, Gwen’s daughter Debbie read the eulogy, ‘Songbird’ by Fleetwood Mac was performed by Thomas on guitar and sung by Chloe (grandchildren).

The family are grateful to the Fr Marcus Zipperlen, Andrew Rees Funeral Directors who carried out the funeral arrangements and staff at Withybush Hospital.

Mrs A R Murray

Freystrop

A large gathering of family and friends attended St Justinian’s Church, Freystrop on Monday May 23, for the funeral service and burial of Angela Ruth Murray (nee Davies).

Angela was born on March 7 1963 in South Pembs Hospital, Pembroke Dock. She attended Hook C P School and then Haverfordwest Secondary Modern School, where many lifelong friendships were made. She met her husband Robert Murray in 1992 and they went on to marry in 1993. Later that year their first son James was born and in 1995 their second son Louis was born. Sadly in 2012 their son Louis was killed in a motor cycle accident. After a short illness, which she faced with such courage. Angela passed away on Tuesday May 10 at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

The family left to mourn are Robert Murray (husband); James Murray (son); Cruz (grandson); Byron and Pauline (parents); Margaret Mur-ray (mother-in-law); Joanne and Richard Frank (sister and brother-in-law); Jordan and Jasmin Frank (nephew and niece), and numerous family and friends.

The bearers were James Murray, Nigel Murray, Peter Adams, Nigel Rodney, Colin Smith and David Thompson.

Mr D Brown

Canada

Formerly of Monkton

MR David Brown (nickname Dumbo), who was 59 years old passed away peacefully in Canada on June 14.

Originally from Monkton he moved to Toronto, Canada 35 years ago.

He attended the Grammar School in Pembroke Dock and he was a keen goalkeeper for Monkton Swifts for many years.

He then joined the Royal Navy when he was 19.

He will be sadly missed by his son and wife Daniel and Colleen and his daughter Krystle and his four grandchildren who all live in Toronto, Canada.

Also his mum Jean Hicks and stepdad Billy Hicks; Sheila (sister); Gwilym and Davina (brother and sisterin- law); Shirley and Roger (sister and brother-in-law); Andrew and Jan (brother and sister-in-law); Hilary and Andrew (sister and brother-informed perlaw); Wendy and Paul (sister and brother-in-law) and all of their families.

The burial has taken place in Toronto, Canada.

Mrs B M Sherlock

Llanreath

Pembroke Dock

MRS Barbara Mary Sherlock of St Patricks Hill, Llanreath, Pembroke Dock passed away on May 22 at Withybush Hospital.

She was 78.

Originally from Bedwas, South Wales she attended Bassaleg Grammar School and then went on to work in Cardiff for an insurance office as a secretary.

After her marriage and having Andre and Lee, Barbara moved to Hereford, where she worked in the college then for the Community Health Council rising to Chief Officer at Walsall, and retired at the age of 60.

Golf was her main hobby and she played at Trefloyne, where she was Lady Captain.

Music was important to Babs from an early age. Babs played piano and guitar and enjoyed most music.

She was predeceased by her husband Brian Sherlock.

The family left to mourn are Andre and Lee (sons); Zoe (granddaughter); Jack and Declan (grandsons); Margaret and Tony (sister and brother-in-law); Gwyn and Diane (brother and sister-inlaw, Australia).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Roger Hart.

Mrs Hilda Turley

Merlins Bridge

MRS Hilda Turley from Merlins Bridge passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on May 23 at the age of 94.

She was born Hilda Mary Rowe at Talley (Carmarthenshire) in 1922. Until 24 days before she passed away, Hilda lived in the same house for 65 years.

She was predeceased by her husband Bryn 18 months ago, and grandson Neil 20 years ago, and granddaughter Charmaine nearly three years ago.

The family left to mourn are Janet and Dave Mabe, Joan and Tony Williams, Diane and Malcolm Morris (daughters and husbands); Stewart, Marc, Stephen, Amy, Mark, Shan, Alun, Samantha and Neil (grandchildren and spouses); Andrea and Ernie (step granddaughter and husband); Lauren, Jake, Dafydd, Connor, Francesca, Arianne, Thomas (great grandchildren); Amy, Nathen and partners, Owen and Bethan (step great grandchildren) and Fletcher (step great great grandson), other relatives too numerous to mention, also some very good friends.

Hilda’s funeral took place on June 1 at St Michaels Church (Rudbaxton) officiated by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther and Canon Derek Evans then at Parc Gwyn which was officiated by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther.

The bearers were Stewart, Stephen, Mark (grandsons), Alun, Neil, Tony (grandsonsin- law).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Robin at Roy Folland and Son, of Haverfordwest.
