A 98-YEAR-OLD care home resident died after her health deteriorated following operations to both her hips, an inquest heard on Thursday.

Megan Lloyd Morris of the Parc y Llyn nursing home, Ambleston died at Withybush on May 19 following the operations.

At the June 21 inquest, held at Milford Haven Town Hall, Coroner’s officer for Dyfed-Powys Police Jeremy Davies said Cardigan-born Mrs Morris, one of 18 children, had met her husband in 1947, and they farmed for many years near Cardigan.

After Mr Morris passed away in 1988, Mrs Morris lived alone until 2010-11, when she became frail, the inquest heard.

She moved to Parc y Llyn in 2011.

Mrs Morris suffered from a variety of medical conditions, including dementia, hypertension, and deep-veined thrombosis.

On the afternoon of May 16, Mrs Morris started to fall as she was being changed by a senior staff member.

She was taken to the floor gently, the inquest heard.

The following day, Mrs Morris was suffering pain to her hips and could not stand.

An ambulance was called and Mrs Morris was taken to Withybush hospital.

An X-ray revealed issues with both of Mrs Morris’s hips, and surgery was undertaken on May 18.

Mrs Morris pulled through the operation, but became unwell very quickly post-operation, the inquest heard.

She passed away shortly after midnight on May 19.

A medical report stated the cause of death of Mrs Morris was a post-operative deterioration, following her hip surgery, complicated by other medical issues.

No post mortem report was needed, the inquest heard.

Coroner Mark Layton, recording a conclusion of an accidental death, said: “Mrs Morris was in declining health; she sustained injuries in a fall that required surgery, she did not recover from the surgery, she deteriorated post-operation.

“In the absence of family members I pass my condolences to them.”
