PEMBROKESHIRE residents using social media have raised concerns about a leaflet being distributed in Fishguard and Goodwick which denounces homosexuality, as well as transgender people and denies evolution.

Facebook posts about the leaflet, distributed by a group called the Evangelist’s Corner, have been circulating on Facebook throughout today (Saturday, July 14), with many residents concerned about the nature of the opinions expressed within it.

Some residents are planning a peaceful demonstration in Fishguard from 2.45pm to coincide with a meeting in the town centre which the leaflet is promoting.

Members of Pembrokeshire LGBTQ Plus, a group set up in recent months provide support and a place to socialise for the county’s LGBTQ community, will also be taking part in the protest.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the group said: “We are concerned that the leaflet that has been distributed to addresses in Fishguard is vitriolic, targeted and offensive.

“PembsPlus would like to affirm that this is not a question of Freedom of Speech.

“PembsPlus recognises and respects the fact that we all have the right to free speech. However, when this voice crosses the lines of the law, that is when we must take a stand.

“The language and agenda behind the statements of The Evangelist’s Corner is homophobic, transphobic and incites hatred in the most extreme of forms.”

The group added: “We have been inundated today with messages of support, encouragement and resilience from both the LGBTQ+ community and the wider community – specifically residents of Fishguard and Goodwick as well as Pembrokeshire more widely.”

The leaflet expressed views about people from the LGBTQ community which concerned residents have described as bullying and hate speech.

It then goes on to criticise the UK government for promoting the rights of people in the LGBTQ community.

The leaflet later denounces Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and asks that schools teach creationism, before making conspiratorial claims about scientists.

It concludes by criticising Ofsted, the education watchdog in England, for teaching children about LGBTQ issues.

The leaflet invites members of the public to a free meeting at a Fishguard shop starting at 3pm.
