A 44-year-old man has died after being hit by a train in Pembrokeshire.

British Transport Police confirmed today (Monday) that the man lost his life in the incident yesterday morning.

Rail services in west Wales were subsequently disrupted for over four hours.

The incident took place on the Whitland to Pembroke Dock line, near to Saundersfoot railway station, on the stretch of track between Valley Road and the B4316.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said that officers were called to the track at 9.58am on Sunday after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

He added: "Colleagues from the ambulance service also attended, however, a 44-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

An Arriva Trains Wales spokesperson said: "Due to an incident on the line between Saundersfoot and Tenby at around 10am on Sunday, services in west Wales were disrupted for approximately four hours.

"We worked closely with our partners in Network Rail and British Transport Police throughout this incident to minimise the disruption, and road transport was sourced for customers as swiftly as possible.

"We would like to thank all customers affected for their patience whilst disruption was ongoing."
