Mrs S M Evans

Spittal

MRS Sylvia Maud Evans passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 1.

She was 93 years.

Sylvia was originally from Pembroke Dock but also lived with her grandparents at Milford Haven.

She often recalled the horrific bombings that took place at Pembroke Dock during WWll and in her later years wrote about her experiences and shared them with local school-children.

Sylvia excelled in bringing that period to life and delighted the children with her answers to their many questions.

At 17, Sylvia joined the Women’s Land Army and enjoyed various responsibilities whilst supporting the war effort. During this time she met her future husband, Thomas Idris Evans.

Following their marriage, they set up a milk round delivery service based at Spittal.

A few years later, they moved to Little Hook, Ambleston, where they farmed and developed the dairy business.

Fondly known as ‘Sylvia the Milk,’ she worked tirelessly to make a success of the dairy and at the same time bring up a family of four sons – Stuart, Richard, Graham and Malcolm.

Over time, the boys married and had their own families and suddenly Sylvia had some spare time which she utilised to the full.

Besides the inevitable babysitting, she engaged in much voluntary work. Sylvia served as a leader for the WRVS at Withybush Hospital and received a 25 year service award.

Other engagements involved her with Zion’s Hill Chapel and Guild, the WI, Barnardo’s Charity Shop and the Luncheon Club.

Her energy and willingness to help others were widely recognised.

The passing away of her husband in 1998 hit her hard but she was determined to continue with the voluntary work as well as supporting her family whom she dearly loved.

She will be sorely missed by all.

The funeral service took place at Zion’s Hill Chapel, Spittal on Monday August 13 where a large gathering of family and friends congregated.

The service was officiated by the Reverend Martin Spain with loving and sincere tributes by family members which included a poem read by grandson Rob, an eulogy delivered by sons Stuart and Richard, a poem composed by granddaughters Alison, Sara and Amy which was read by Alison.

The bearers were grandsons Anthony, Dafydd, Daniel and Oliver.

The organist was Shirly Williams, Zion’s Hill Chapel, Ian Eynon and special appreciation to E. C. Thomas and Son for the excellent way in which they officiated the funeral.

The family are grateful to all the staff at Castle View Residential Home for their professional, caring attitude towards Sylvia during her latter years.

The family left to morn and principal mourners include sons and daughters-in-law, Stuart and Rose, Richard and Sandra, Graham and Catherine and Malcolm and Jane, grandchildren Anthony, Alison, Dafydd, Daniel, Sara, Amy, Robert, Oliver, and their partners, step-grandchildren, sister Mary, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and their families.
