A CAERPHILLY school and manufacturing business are celebrating national recognition after scooping special titles at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Excellence Awards.

Islwyn High School and IG Doors, both based in Oakdale, were awarded the Best Educational Building and Best Large Commercial Building in Wales last week.

The LABC Excellence Awards recognise and reward excellent buildings, along with the companies, partnerships, and individuals which helped build them.

Islwyn High was constructed by Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd and designed by Caerphilly County Borough Council and AHR Architects Ltd.

IG Doors’ new base at Oakdale Business Park was constructed by WRW Construction Ltd and designed by the Kennedy James Griffiths.

The council’s building control team, which manages most construction work across the authority, nominated both projects for the awards having ensured that they met building regulations.

Councillor Sean Morgan, cabinet member for economy, infrastructure and sustainability, said: “These awards demonstrate the high standard of work put into the construction of these buildings and I look forward to seeing these results continue across the Caerphilly county borough.”

Both schemes received their awards at the All Wales National Awards 2018 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on September 21.

Due to their successes, both Islwyn High and IG Doors will now represent Wales at the LABC National Building Excellence Awards in London on November 9.

The awards results were based on seven factors: high levels of compliance, effective working relationships with the council, outstanding craftsmanship, technical innovation, sustainability and performance, and ability to overcome difficult site conditions.
