PEMBROKESHIRE County Council is expected to stump up £60,000 in three years to support the Long Course Weekend in Tenby.

The event, held in Pembrokeshire since 2010, is currently budgeted to the tune of £4,000 a year by the council.

At next Monday’s October 8 meeting of the council’s cabinet, it is recommended to enter in to a three-year agreement with event organisers Activity Wales, with an annual sum of £20,000.

This follows a request for financial support.

In 2018, the event, televised in 100 countries, attracted 8,700 athletes, with over 160,000 ‘bed nights’ created, a report for members states.

The event will also be supported ‘in kind’ by waiving fees for StreetCare and Parking services, road closure order costs, and ensuring a council Event Control Lead Officer works alongside Activity Wales.

No details of any financial implications of these are provided in the report.

It is also proposed to work with Activity Wales to establish a way of promoting Pembrokeshire as a destination through its other international events.

The report states: “Long Course weekend is recognised as a major event in our county and is currently a strong platform to promote Pembrokeshire on a national and international standing.”

It adds: “Whilst the council is experiencing significant financial challenges, all contributions must be considered for affordability and benefit to the county. The substantial financial contribution to the local economy by the Long course Weekend clearly outweighs the £20k per annum contribution.”
