IN AN election held on Thursday (October 11), Daphne Bush was elected to the Town Council’s Pembroke St Mary North seat, with almost 40per cent of the vote.

Cllr Bush received 101 of the 257 votes cast, while her nearest competitor, Lyn Edwards received 79 votes.

Marcel Laval, who ran as an independent, received 52 votes, and Philip Whitehead received 25 votes.

The vote was held to replace David ‘Dai’ Boswell, who was co-opted onto the council in 2011.

Boswell vacated the seat earlier this year after being convicted of child rape.

He was jailed for 18 years after being found guilty of raping one girl and indecently assaulting another when they were both aged under 10.

Cllr Bush ran for county councillor earlier this year, coming in second to Cllr Jon Harvey.

“It is a privilege to have an official capacity,” Cllr Bush said. “To be able to serve the groups which I have continued to serve and support since my involvement in local government in 2011.

“I’ve got experience from being on the county council before, and people wanted me to [run], so I did.

“I’m not very competitive, I treat it as a job - I take it very seriously - I stand for town council knowing full well what needs doing.”

Cllr Bush said she already has ideas for what she wants to start tackling when she takes her seat.

“What concerns me is the speed of traffic. The Speed of traffic in the ward is awful.

Cllr Bush pointed to areas of the ward where it wasn’t safe for young families because of the speeds cars were going at.

“I want to see additional facilities for young people,” she added. “The Tanyard is well used, but we need additional facilities for young people of all ages.

“I want to focus on the health and wellbeing of the community.”
