A Haverfordwest labourer stole from a local supermarket when work dried up after the summer, a court has heard.
Liam Matthews, of Hill Street, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from a shop when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, October 9.
Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, said Matthews stole goods and alcohol worth £12 from Aldi, Haverfordwest, on September 1, and £7.50 of alcohol from the same store on September 18.
Jonathan Webb, defending, said Matthews, 33, admitted both offences at the first opportunity and apologised to the supermarket.
He added that the thefts had been financially motivated as Matthews had been laid off as a builder’s labourer at the end of the summer.
“He encountered financial hardship as a result. He had no money and foolishly stole these items.”
“When Mr Matthews is in employment he stays out of trouble.”
Magistrates imposed 60 hours of unpaid work and ordered Matthews to pay £19.50 compensation plus £170 in costs and a surcharge.
