STEPASIDE CP School has been celebrating in the great outdoors, with an Urdd football victory and the arrival of its new play area.

The school received a £4,000 Bags of Help grant from Tesco towards the outdoor facility, together with generous donations in memory of a local couple, Mr and Mrs Godfrey Jones.

Former pupil Denise Burrows and her family made the donations which were received in lieu of flowers at Mr Jones' funeral, and also bequeathed in the couple's estate.

Said headteacher Paul Harries: "Added together, these finances allowed us to plan for a fantastic play area and provision of extra outdoor seating for group work and quiet activities.

"There simply is not the money in school budgets to provide this type of activity centre, so we are extremely grateful to Mrs Burrows and her family for the generous donations she presented to the school, and also to Tesco, their customers and Groundworks UK for the grant of £4,000.

"These donations have meant that a previously impossible dream has been realised.

"The pupils are enjoying using the equipment as part of their PE lessons, as well as during play times."

Meanwhile, the school's football team is looking forward to the next stage of the Urdd football tournament, after winning the recent tournament in Tenby.

They lost their first match against Neyland, but progressed to the quarter-finals with wins over Sageston, Gelli Aur and St Florence.

A quarter-final win against St Francis took them to the semi-final to meet Hafan y Mor, and a 'golden goal' from Logan put them through to the final against Tenby.

An impressive performance saw Stepaside claim a 2-0 victory, with goals from Logan and Olly.

Said Mr Harries: "I would like to congratulate each player for their wonderful performance, and the supporters who cheered the team on during the very successful day."
