Mrs T Hughes

MRS Thelma Hughes of Lindsway Park passed away unexpectedly on September 10.

Thelma was born at Neeston Farm, Herbrandston, the younger daughter of Charles Benjamin Griffiths formerly of Walwyn’s Castle and Mrs Edith Lilian Griffiths formerly of Glamorgan. The family lived in Milford Haven, Freystrop and Magor before settling in St Athan where they kept the Post Office. Thelma attended school in Aberystwyth, leaving there at the beginning of World War 2 to train as a telephonist in Cardiff.

Thelma met Ellis, who was based at RAF St Athan, in 1940 and they married in Haroldston St Issell’s Church shortly after his demobilisation settling in Haverfordwest. It was always Thelma’s wish to make her home in Pembrokeshire where she and her sister, Hazel who predeceased her, had lived their early life and had spent regular holidays with relatives.

Thelma and Ellis with their two children, David and Ann, lived firstly in Merlins Bridge and finally in St Martins Park where they happily spent over 30 years only moving to a bungalow in 1994 to accommodate Ellis’s health needs. During her final years Thelma lived in Lindsway Park with her daughter, Ann, who, to the family’s great gratitude, was a wonderful and devoted carer.

Thelma was a member of Tabernacle Chapel where she became a Sunday School teacher and was a loyal member of Ladies Guild. She also volunteered at the Gateway Club for young people, the WRVS, Prendergast House Residential Home and Haverfordwest Luncheon Club. She worked in Haverfordwest Telephone Exchange for 25 years, retiring aged 60.

Thelma was the inspirational family figurehead for many years and especially so in those periods of great sadness that followed the deaths of her devoted husband Ellis and daughter-in-law Jacquie.

She was acknowledged by family and friends as a fun character with a sharp wit and a mischievous sense of humour evidence of which was remembered at her funeral service.

Thelma was a kind, generous, devoted and thoughtful lady, who was adored by her whole family and is greatly missed.

The funeral was held in Tabernacle Church where the minister, Rev Christopher Gillham officiated and family friend, Rev Geoffrey Eynon, who delivered a moving eulogy typically filled with humour for which Thelma was noted.

The principal mourners were David and Sarah (son and daughter-in-law); Ann (daughter); Simon and Lizzie (grandson and wife); Charles (grandson); Rachael and Sam (granddaughter and husband); Matthew, Esther and Ian (step grandchildren); Florence and Alice (great granddaughters) and Emma (step granddaughter) were unable to attend.
