Steynton

MRS Mary Isabella Brown passed away peacefully at Southampton General Hospital after a short illness on October 10. She was 84.

She was born on The Green, St Brides, near Magor in Newport.

She worked at Slendos in Newport, Gwent and also Santon Electrical, Newport and Gwent RN Caerwent.

It was while travelling to work in Newport, Mary met her future husband Ron and they married in Chepstow RC church in 1955 later moving to Pembrokeshire to set up home and raise their three children. Mary had many interests including travelling extensively. She was an active and dedicated member of St Francis RC church where she regularly volunteered in flower arranging, social events and Sunday morning coffee service. She made many friends attending whist drives and was an avid player enjoying every minute of it. She was also a member of the Knitting Club at Mastlebridge, where she recently learned to crochet.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

The family left to mourn are her husband, daughter, two sons and four grandchildren.

A requiem mass was held on October 26 at St Francis RC church followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery, Thornton.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven.

Mrs S J Trueman

Hakin

MRS Sylvia Jayne Trueman of Dairy Park, Hakin, passed away at Withybush Hospital on September 30. She was 61.

Originally from Milford Haven she worked in retail for the majority of her working life.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved listening to music.

The family left to mourn are Matthew and Joanne Trueman (son and daughter-in-law); Christopher and Kate Trueman (son and daughter-in-law); Kellyanne, Taylor, Lily, Madison, Ella, Darcey and Libby (granddaughter); Barry and Lorna (brother and sister-in-law); Wendy and Abbie (sister and brother-in-law); Natalie, Andrew and Brennan (niece and nephews).

The service was held at St Davids Church, Hubberston followed by interment at Thornton Cemetery, Milford Haven.

The bearers were Brennan Martin, Barry Leggatt, Garry Martin and John McSparron.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven.

Mrs D M Jones

Trefin

MRS Delsie Mary Jones passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on October 10, aged 83.

Delsie was born in Upper Terrace, Castle Morris and was the eldest of two daughters.

Delsie married her late husband Don in 1954 and they ran the local village shop for over fifty years in Penparc, Trefin.

She was a very popular character in her community and had many friends. She was a kind, generous and thoughtful lady who was devoted to her family, who adored her and will miss her greatly.

The principal mourners were Margaret (sister); Ann and Anthony (daughter and son-in-law); Ian and Tracey (son and daughter-in-law); Bethan and Alan (daughter and son-in-law); grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

The funeral took place at Croesgoch Baptist Chapel on October 18. The service was officiated by the Reverend Geraint Morse. The organist was Mrs Valerie Llewhelin. Interment then followed at Croesgoch Cemetery.

The bearers were Paul Thomas and Gareth Jones (grandsons); Mike Wilde and Paul Pollock (grandsons-in-law).

Mr J L Rowlands

Pembroke Dock

A LOCAL gentleman, John passed away peacefully at South Pembrokeshire Hospital on October 4 age 85.

He had spent several weeks at Withybush Hospital and several weeks at South Pembs Hospital.

John was born in Upper Meyrick Street, Pembroke Dock to Evelyn and Leonard Rowlands. Although he mainly grew up in the ‘Dock’ John spent some time at Angle School, during the war years, his schooling continued at the Coronation School (for boys), in Meyrick Street, at the age of eleven, he attended the grammar school in Argyle Street.

John joined the ATC when he was fourteen, and at the age of eighteen he signed up for three years with the RAF, his basic training was at West Kirby on the Wirral, he was then posted to Cardington in Bedfordshire then onto Melksham in Wiltshire. His overseas posting took him to Aden (now Yemen) and he sailed on the troop ship called ‘The Windrush’, which was later used to carry immigrants from the Caribbean to the UK, this trip took fifteen long days.

After the RAF John served his apprenticeship as a painter and decorated with the family firm under WT Rowlands, John’s grandfather, his dad was also employed with the firm.

Later John got a post working for the Department of the Environment, he studied at Neyland Campus of Pembrokeshire College and became a member of the Institute of Builders and later becoming a Licentiate. He was responsible for the maintenance of homes and buildings, for the Ministry and Defence ranges, in south Pembrokeshire, including Penally, Manorbier, Castlemartin, Pendine and Aberporth. He then rose to become a Superintendent of Works, John held this post for thirty two years.

In 1955 John met Sheila and they married on August 8 1959 and were happily married for 59 years. They have two daughters Tina married to Timothy, and Anne married to Iain, and two granddaughters Lily and Holly.

John was very proud of his daughters and adored his granddaughters.

In December 1960 John followed his dad and became a Freeman of Pembroke, he was treasurer of the Freeman’s Guild of Pembroke for 33 years.

John had a varied taste in music, from rock and roll, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins to traditional Jazz he also enjoyed playing his electronic organ at home.

For many years John made the stage props for the local Pater Pantomime Society. He enjoyed DIY around his home, his hobbies were reading, crosswords, family holidays, and taking their touring caravan to Angle for most of the summer.

John was a founder member of the short mat bowling club at St John’s Hall, Pembroke Dock, he was also the president of the club, he enjoyed the luncheon club on Tuesday, held at the hall.

The funeral was held at St John’s Church, Bush Street, Pembroke Dock and followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn on October 18, both services were officiated by the Reverend Marina Evans. The eulogy was read by Gareth John, the choir sang ‘Make me a channel of your peace’.

The bearers were members of St John’s Short Mat Bowling Club - Phil Bowen, Norman Hogg, Ken Davies and John Coppin.

John will be greatly missed by his wife Sheila, Tina, Anne, Timothy, Iain, Lily and Holly.

The large number of cards, flowers and messages received by the family were a testament of the high regards and respect in which John was held.

Formerly of Milford Haven

DR John Thynne died peacefully on October 23 aged 87, in Santa Barbara, California.

Born in Milford Haven, the eldest son of Corelli James Thynne, a fish merchant and Isabel Ann Thynne (nee Griffiths).

John attended Milford Haven Grammar School and subsequently graduated from Nottingham University. He held two doctorates, a Ph.D from Nottingham University and a D.Sc. from Edinburgh University.

After an academic career in the UK and North America he joined the Civil Service in 1970 and held positions advising ministers in the Ministry of Technology, the Department of Trade and Industry and Foreign Office.

John spent four years on the staff of the British Embassy in Moscow.

Following his retirement from the civil service he held a number of directorships and consultant roles with several high technology companies.

As a close business associate of the Welsh Canadian high-tech entrepreneur Sir Terry Matthews, he was instrumental in championing the Celtic Manor resorts successful bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2010.

He was awarded the order of the Bath (CB) in the Queens birthday honours in 1990.

In 2008 John married Barbara Huemer, whom he first met in 1959 on an academic sabbatical to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and in later years they both made their home in California.

Mr J Price

Wolfscastle

MR John Price passed away suddenly on October 2 at his home in Wolfscastle.

Born in Trefin, John was the only child of the late Hubert and Letty Price of Bill Farm. The family moved back to Wolfcastle when he was a few days old.

John lived his whole life at the family home, he attended Wolfscastle School, then Secondary Modern in Haverfordwest.

On leaving school he farmed with his parents at Bill Farm.

At the age of 19 he lost his father aged 53, and a few years later lost his mother aged 54.

John continued to farm, in 1980 he married Fern and they farmed together for 38 years.

He retired six weeks prior to his death.

The family left to mourn are Fern (wife); Sharon and Alan, Pauline and Gary (daughters and sons-in-law); Matthew and Nikki (son and daughter-in-law); Lisa, Kelly, William, Charlie, Amy, Emily, Ema, Sean, Nia, Ffion, Owen and Jemma (grandchildren); Elliot (great grandson); Ernest James (father-in-law) plus many extended family.

The funeral was held on October 12 at Penybont Chapel, followed by interment at Penybont Cemetery.

The service was officiated by ministers Geoffrey Eynon and Martin Spain.

The bearers were Micheal George, Rowland George, Teifryn Williams, David Scourfield, Chris Wolsey and Nick Best (farming neighbours). The organ was played by Hailwen Warlow and the eulogy was read by Micheal George.

The hundreds of people who attended his funeral and many cards and messages received by the family were testament to such a loving and respected man.
