THE circumstances surrounding the death of a man, found in a Haverfordwest flat, could not be fully determined, an inquest heard last week.

The decomposed body of Thomas Penson, 30, was found at Flat 5, Tower Hill, Haverfordwest on August 12.

At the November 15 inquest, held at Milford Haven Town Hall, Coroner’s Officer Jeremy Davies said Mr Penson had been staying at the Haverfordwest address in the time leading up to his death.

Mr Penson was last seen on July 30 by a police officer on an unrelated matter.

He was unsteady on his feet and suffering pain in his legs, due to ‘pin holes’ in his feet, from a suspected injection of drugs.

Mr Penson’s body was not discovered until August 12 when a concerned neighbour called police.

Various medication blister packs were found at the flat, the inquest heard.

Paramedics were called, and Mr Penson was formally declared to have passed away at 3.52pm that day.

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, the inquest heard.

A post-mortem report by Dr John Murphy said the cause of Mr Penson’s death could not be ascertained.

Reaching an open conclusion, Pembrokeshire Coroner for Mark Layton said: “The cause of death cannot be established, there is no other evidence available.

“There are a number of potential causes, there is no evidence he intended to end his life.

“There are two possible alternatives: medication, and death as a result of drugs, or some underlying medical condition. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you which it is.”
