THE DOORS of new affordable homes in a former Haverfordwest hotel have been thrown open for a preview ahead of them going on the market.

Pembroke House Hotel on Barn Street was derelict for several years before it was bought by Cardiff-based developer Taylor Made Homes in 2016.

Taylor Made specialises in renovating historic buildings into affordable homes, with the 23 flats in Pembroke House being the company’s first project outside Cardiff.

Jeff Taylor, the managing director of Taylor Made Homes, said the project was the first of a model he hopes to use for buildings in other regions of Wales.

“The project has come together very nicely. We have done it to a very high standard,” he said.

“We are hoping to take the model we have used here and apply it to other out-of-use historic buildings across Wales.”

The Welsh Government-backed Development Bank of Wales has offered Jeff funding to build 10 more affordable housing units in other historic buildings.

The Grade 2 listed building was originally built in 1839 by the local architect William Owen.

The once grand hotel was closed in 2011 and stood empty for five years before being bought in 2016.

When Jeff began work, the place was in bad repair: the roof had leaked and many of the floors had fallen through leaving it in a dangerous condition.

Before any work could begin in the property many of the upper floors had to be replaced altogether.

There are 23 affordable housing units in total planned for the former hotel, with plans to finish all of them by April 2019.

Two of the units have had to be sold as self-contained flats to cover the cost of the construction work, with one having already sold for £80,000 and another on the market for £72,000.

Soft loans from Pembrokeshire County Council have helped to fund the project.

The other flats will all be rented out for prices between £325 and £475 a month.
