Magistrates have ordered the destruction of a Trecwn man’s home-grown cannabis.

Brendan Hughes, of Barham Road, pleaded guilty to cannabis production and possession when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday, November 20.

Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, told the bench that police executed a search warrant at Hughes’ home on August 11, and discovered a tin containing herbal cannabis and a disassembled hydroponic set-up.

She said that the equipment was not being used to cultivate cannabis at the time, but there was evidence the drug had previously been grown in Hughes’ attic, and further investigation found five cut plants.

Jonathan Webb, defending, said: “He was basically growing cannabis in the loft area.”

Mr Webb added that five grams of cannabis leaf had been found in the tin, but what was left of the plants could not be smoked and was only fit for a compost heap.

“They are effectively useless. They had not been swept away or disposed of. The reality is that he was in possession of five grams of cannabis.

“He had been growing his own cannabis for his own personal use.”

Magistrates fined 25 year-old Hughes £120 and ordered him to pay £115 in costs and a surcharge.

A destruction order was made for the drugs and paraphernalia.
