HAVERFORDWEST High VC School has been honoured with a national award for its commitment to improving and encouraging literacy skills.

The school was ranked as the top performing secondary school in Wales in the 2018 Renaissance Awards.

The awards honour the best performing schools from across the country in terms of their implementation of best practices for reading, and student growth in reading attainment – as measured by Renaissance Star Reading and Renaissance Accelerated Reader (AR).

Across the UK and Ireland Renaissance solutions for reading assessment and practice support almost 1.5m students in becoming independent readers.

Using AR, students read a suitably-challenging book, take an online quiz, and get immediate feedback.

Star Reading features highly adaptive software that means its tests cannot be taught to and, together with AR, is in use in nearly 6,000 schools.

Steve Walker, Assistant Headteacher of Haverfordwest High VC School said: "It is a great honour to be awarded this accolade by Renaissance in recognition of all our hard-working pupils and the reading culture the school has created.”
