A dementia support group has won an award for its essential work in the county.

Forget Me Knots Pembrokeshire, was awarded the Pride in Pembrokeshire award for November recently.

Now in its sixth year, the group has grown from humble beginnings in a café in Neyland to become one of the leading support groups for people living with dementia in Pembrokeshire.

They are the 16th recipients of the award.

In arriving at the decision, Pride in Pembrokeshire panel members said they were particularly impressed with the group’s “commitment to delivering a volunteer-led approach to meeting local need, their support for the local community and how they work with local groups.”

They added “It is clear that Forget Me Knots Pembrokeshire makes a substantial contribution to improving individual and community well-being in their area.”

Meeting monthly at the Mosaic Café in Neyland, the aim of the group is provide support and advice regarding dementia services in Pembrokeshire, says Annette Barry the group’s co-ordinator.

“We are here for the person with dementia and their principle carer.

“We want to help spread the message of living well with dementia and to reduce the stigma and fear associated with the condition, she added.

“We also help others spread the message too, like local attractions. We converse with them and they are able to deliver informative talks and demonstrations tailored to the group’s needs.”

Launched in 2017, the Pride in Pembrokeshire Awards are a partnership between the Pembrokeshire Public Services Board (PSB) and the Western Telegraph – with each winning entry awarded £200.
