WHERE should any future tourist information centre be sited in Cardigan?

The current centre at Theatr Mwldan is to close as part of cutbacks by Ceredigion County Council – a decision widely condemned in the town - and discussions are currently taking place to offer some sort of service at Cardigan Castle run by volunteers.

However, in a letter read out at Cardigan Town Council, Julian Beynon-Lewis, of not for profit community company Menter Aberteifi, has also suggested that the Guildhall could play a pivotal role.

“The tourist information centre should be at the heart of the town in the Guildhall or Markethall,” said Mr Beynon-Lewis.

“I have heard that the castle has been mooted. We deal with several inquiries already and I feel that the Guildhall is the natural place for such a service. We have space available with minimum of investment needed.”

He has suggested a meeting between councillors and Menter Aberteifi to look at a long-term solution involving “a technological solution with a minimum of human intervention”.

“Retail and tourism is so important to Cardigan and the Tourist Information Centre should be in the heart of the town,” added Mr Beynon-Lewis.

Cllr Catrin Miles said: “We have said that in the future such an idea could be a good thing.

“The letter mentions minimal investment but there is no money at the moment to do this. The castle is offering his site for free but in future this could change.”
