WORK is still being carried out to install new CCTV cameras in Cardigan town centre.

It had been planned to have the new system in operation by the end of September last year under a scheme promoted by Dyfed-Powys police and crime commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn but that has still not happened.

The previous CCTV system in Cardigan was scrapped back in 2014 due to spiralling costs but Mr Llywelyn has pledged to restore them in town across the Dyfed-Powys Police area, funded from the precept.

Cllr Clive Evans told a meeting of Cardigan Town Council: “An assessment has been made for their locations in town.

“They will cover Finch Square, High Street and Priory Street, Pendre and Bathhouse Road and Morgan Street and St Mary’s Street and will operate 24/7.

“We are waiting for BT Openreach to get a fibre optic link back to the police station at Parc Teifi.”

The police and crime commissioner pledged £2m investment to CCTV and committed to its roll out to help "support policing resources" and "keep our communities safe".

"Careful consideration is being given to reinvestment of CCTV within our policing area and analysis of demand emerging from data relating to crime and anti-social behaviour is informing where CCTV will be implemented,” said Mr Llewelyn.

A total of 116 cameras will be put in 17 towns across the force area.
