TEENAGERS will be taking to the runway at Carew Airfield as a local driving school has announced lessons to give them an early confidence boost.

Fast-Track driving school, based in Haverfordwest, will be offering lessons to teenagers from fourteen years old upwards from February.

The lessons are aimed at building young people’s confidence behind the wheel on the runways and concrete roads of Carew Airfield before they begin learning to drive on the public highway at 17 or older.

“The idea is when they get to 16 or 17 they know how to drive already,” said Simon Mottram of Fast-Track.

“Can you imagine if you had 20 or 30 lessons prior to that so you know just how to drive?

“This is a nice open area and they have the luxury of space.

“This is going to give them a really good sense of how to handle a car and handle the road.”

Western Telegraph:

Simon added the lessons were about building confidence in young drivers, so that when they finally drive onto busy roads they are not overwhelmed or scared by the experience.

The plan has been in the pipeline for a few years according to Simon, with a long search taking place to find the perfect place to hold the lessons.

“We were offered a space in Haverfordwest last year, but it wasn’t anywhere big enough to do it,” he said.

Then the offer of the 2km Carew Airfield came along, which has three runways at a length of 965m, 1,040m and 765m long respectively.

The airfield was used for military operations in both the First and Second World War, and after being decommissioned has become a site for car boot sales, go-karting and auctions.

Fast-Track driving school will be offering half-an-hour lessons, one-hour lessons, or shared one-hour lessons for two drivers at Carew Airfield from Saturday, February 16.

Only learners accompanied by a Fast-Track driving instructor will be permitted to use the airfield.
