Pembrokeshire County Council has apologised for a spill of hundreds of glass bottles which left smashed glass covering miles of roads this morning.

Roads were closed and there was traffic chaos following the spillage from a council vehicle.

A spokesman for the council, told the Western Telegraph:

"This morning (14th February) items escaped from one of the Council’s hook-link lorries carrying a skip containing glass while it was en route from the authority’s civic amenity site at Crane Cross to the Withyhedge transfer facility at Rudbaxton near Haverfordwest.

"The council immediately deployed crew and plant - including road sweepers and blowers - to remove the debris from the sections of affected road.

"The skip is currently being examined and the fault will be rectified before being brought back into use.

"The authority apologises for inconvenience caused to road users."

Given the distance of road affected, it appears the lorry has continued to travel while bottles and other glasses fell and smashed over a wide area.

Tenby Neighbourhood Policing team, said at the time: "Drivers please avoid the A477 Kilgetty roundabout, Begelly and Pentlepoir.

"There has been a substantial amount of glass fallen from a lorry onto the roads. Officers are at scene, however due to the large service area of the issue, there continues to be a lot of disruption/danger."

They added: "Glass is also on the road from Templeton up towards the Haverfordwest roundabout, A40 westbound. Our traffic units are at scene and PCC'S Road sweepers have been deployed."

A driver told the Western Telegraph it was 'pandemonium' with smashed glass strewn all over the road and cars desperately trying to avoid damage.

There were reports that glass could even be seen on the A40 Cartlett roundabout approaching Haverfordwest, in Canaston Bridge and Templeton.

Two of the large road sweepers wee deployed on the trunk road (A477) and at Pentlepoir with two smaller road sweepers on the road from Canaston to Kilgetty.
