A Tenby painter and decorator paid £195 for £2.38 of groceries following a court appearance.
Andrew David Broadhurst, of no fixed abode, care of Newall Hill, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop, when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, February 12.
The court heard that Broadhurst, 53, stole a load of bread and other groceries totalling £2.38 from Co-operatives stores, Kilgetty, on January 4.
Jonathan Webb, defending, said: “It was a low level theft. Mr Broadhurst finds himself somewhat on his uppers.”
He added that Broadhurst was a self-employed painter and decorator, but work had become ‘sporadic’.
“His relationship has broken down. He is struggling a bit at the moment. He did not have the money and took the items.”
Magistrates fined Broadhurst £80 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £30 surcharge.
