DON’T dump rubbish at the bottle bank at Rhydlewis Village Hall.

That is the message to local residents from hall committee members who are having to clear up increasingly large amounts of rubbish.

A hall spokesman said: “We have a bottle bank at the hall for the use of local residents and we receive about £150 a year toward hall funds from Ceredigion Council in payment for the glass they collect.

“However, over the last six months there have been increasing instances of people leaving bags of rubbish rather than bottles. Today I spent 40 minutes clearing along the side of the hall where rubbish bags have blown open.

“As well as the bottles that I had to transfer from the bags into the bins I also had to remove two half-full five litre oil containers, a washing up bowl, cans, cardboard and an old metal and glass light shade. I also had to sweep up a lot of broken glass that had come from the broken bags.

“If bottles aren't put into the bottle bins the council workers won't take them. As we don't have refuse collections from the hall all bags, cardboard, boxes and any other recycling or refuse has to be cleared by our volunteers, taken to our own homes and put out with our weekly waste.

“We shouldn't have to do this so come on people of Rhydlewis and the Troedyraur area - don't leave anything alongside the bottle bins. If they are full take your glass back home and try again in a few days, and please don't leave any other refuse or the boxes, bags etc that you use to transport your empties.”
