TALKS are being held to discuss how to improve the public toilets at Poppit Sands.

Pembrokeshire County Council, the National Park Authority, St Dogmaels Community Council, service contractors Danfo and Poppit Sands Surf Lifesaving Club will all be involved in looking at ways to bring the ageing toilets up to scratch.

St Dogmaels county councillor Mike James said: “If we do not have adequate toilet facilities on the beach, visitors will go to somewhere else that does, which will have a huge effect on tourism and businesses in the area.

“It is also vitally important that we keep our Blue Flag status and the state of the toilets could impact that.

“The toilets are so old and there are no baby-changing facilities, which in this day and age should be available.”

The provision and maintenance of public toilets throughout Pembrokeshire – with 72 facilities – is currently being assessed following a review, members of the council’s policy and pre-decision overview and scrutiny committee were told.

Pembrokeshire has the second highest number of public toilets in the UK and cabinet member for environmental service Cllr Cris Tomos told members that the public consultation on toilet provision had received 450 responses.
