YSGOL Bro Gwaun's school hall was the venue for a relaxed and enjoyable certificate and prize giving evening last week.

Wendy Raymond, chair of the governing body, introduced Dr Alis Deason, this year's guest speaker.

Dr Deason is a past pupil of the school, and her inspiring speech made her an excellent role model for the young people.

In her address, she spoke about her determination to succeed in the world of work.

Following A' levels at Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Alis studied natural science at Cambridge, where she also completed her PhD in astrophysics.

Following her degree, Alis carried out research into astronomy at the University of Santa Cruz, California, and at Stanford University. Her current role is assistant professor of astronomy at Durham University.

Alis congratulated pupils on their excellent results and encouraged them to persevere and be flexible as they continue to work hard towards their future goals.

Headteacher, Paul Edwards, stressed how many aspects within school life should combine to ensure all pupils achieve their goals. He thanked all concerned for their invaluable efforts.

Head girl and boy, Elen Maycock and Iago Evans, gave the guests an informative and comprehensive overview of 2017-18's wide and varied range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities. Their deputies, Ellie Cleary and Morgan Evans delivered the vote of thanks.
