It may have been raining cats and dogs, but canines and their companions still braved Wednesday’s weather to enjoy SaundersWoof 2019.

Organised to celebrate and encourage responsible dog ownership, the fun day took place on Saundersfoot’s harbourside National Events Deck.

Soggy doggies and umbrella-toting owners turned out to meet dogs who work, canine-supporting charities and purveyors of pooch-friendly treats including pup-cakes.

The event was organised by Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism and Dyfed-Powys police, with the support of Pembrokeshire County Council.

Competitions for dogs included a sausage-catching contest, while children were fascinated with the ‘don’t step on the dog poo’ challenge which reinforced the clean-up message.

Said PCSO Rachel Adams: “We’ve had a really good attendance, despite the weather.

“Some lovely people and their dogs have shown their commitment by coming along – that’s the dog community for you.”

Added Dilys Hackett of Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism: “Saundersfoot was the most recent winner of the Dog Friendly Village category in the Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire awards, so we were celebrating that with our attractions today.

“We also wanted to make sure that people know that despite the forthcoming dog summer restrictions on beaches, dogs are welcome all year round in Saundersfoot on Coppet Hall and Glen beaches.”

Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism businesses also donated prizes for a raffle, whose proceeds will be shared between Greenacres Animal Rescue, Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Cinnamon Trust and Burns By Your Side reading dogs scheme.
