Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is investigating a slurry spill which has impacted the Afon Dyfan near Cilgerran, a tributary of the River Teifi.

Initial assessments indicate that up to 120,000 gallons of slurry has been lost.

The farmer reported the incident to NRW when it happened and immediately took measures to minimise the amount the slurry entering the river.

The slurry store has since been secured and NRW officers continue their assessment of the area to determine what impact the pollution has had on the river and its wildlife.

Water samples have been collected for analysis, and officers are following up on local reports that dead fish have been seen.

Bob Phillips, Natural Resources Management Team Leader from NRW said: “Slurry pollution can have a devastating impact on our rivers and fish stocks, so it’s important than farmers spread responsibly and ensure that their slurry stores are maintained and fit for purpose.

“We continue to work with the farming industry to prevent incidents like this from happening, and to make sure farmers know what action to take should accidents occur.

“Our investigation into how this incident happened continues and the farmer is helping with our enquiries. We’ll be closely monitoring the area, but ask local people to report any further signs of pollution, or fish in distress to our incident hotline on 03000 65 3000.”
