A BYPASS around Haverfordwest could have its speed limit reduced to 50mph in a bid to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The A4076 trunk road, also known as Freemens Way, could soon become a 50mph road if a plan set out by the Welsh Government, which is responsible for the road, goes ahead.

The entire length of the road between the Salutation Square roundabout to the north and the Merlins Bridge roundabout to the south would have its speed limit reduced.

The plans for the change in road conditions will be on display at Haverfordwest’s Riverside Library from today (April 24) for a period of 21 days.

At its January meeting, Haverfordwest Town Council discussed a letter sent by the South Wales Trunk Road Agent suggesting the changes along the road.

Haverfordwest Town Council agreed to send a letter in support of the change in speed limit, with some councillors citing how it could reduce traffic and the danger to pedestrians and cyclists walking on the pavement alongside the bypass.

Traffic often queues on the A4076 during morning and evening rush hour periods, and car accidents often cause tailbacks as far back along the road as Salutation Square or up Dredgeman Hill.
