FORTY frolicking felines delighted an audience of more than over the Easter weekend, as Fishguard Musical Theatre Society (FMTS) put on a purrfect production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical Cats.

It's rare to see a performance of the full West-End version of Cats outside of established mainstream theatres because of strict licensing controls. However FMTs rose to the challenge, putting on a show that looked and sounded stunning.

"The choice to stage Cats was made in response to the group's hunger for a challenge and few would disagree that it doesn't get much more challenging than this," said director Rain Mallone-Hallett.

"We knew the decision alone would turn heads, drop jaws and raise a few eyebrows and of course we relished that, but first and foremost we wanted to prove what we are capable of.

"We took the attitude that if we can handle this, we can set our mind to take on anything we wish, without fear."

This fearless attitude was echoed in the decision to take on the full four-part choral version rather than a simplified score.

"There were many who thought it was madness," said choir master Non Harries. "But it was a two-way street. I put my faith in the cast, and they put their faith in me. It's been an exceptionally rewarding experience and I'm immensely proud of them."

FMTS's next production will be a best of the Westend revue show at Ysgol Bro Gwaun in October. For more information on the group see its Facebook page or website www.fmts.org.uk.
