A CUMBRIAN transport operator has launched a brand new scheme aimed at supporting junior sports clubs across Carlisle.

Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire has unveiled a bursary scheme named Tomorrow’s Local Legends, which offers sports teams up to £500 to fund new equipment.

A total of £3,000 in funding is available, with the bursary open to clubs of children aged between five and 16.

The money can be spent on new equipment such as kits, goals, cones, shirts, bibs or balls.

Mark Whitelocks, managing director for Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire, said: “We understand how difficult it is for local sports clubs to secure funding, and how commonplace it is for equipment and kits to need an upgrade.

“It’s also incredibly important to do everything we can to reduce any barriers preventing kids from getting active, so with that in mind we’re delighted to launch the Tomorrow’s Local Legends bursary.

“The bursary will lend a helping hand to local teams which need a few extra bits of kit and we look forward to seeing some of these local clubs in action next season.”

Applications are open until July 5, with chosen clubs contacted by July 10.

Once clubs have purchased their new equipment and/or kits, which will feature Stagecoach branding, they will be invited to take part in a video, to showcase how the money has been spent.
